Cult Status Leadership

Date January 26, 2009

What happens when a leader gains cult status? The short answer is that everything becomes tied in some way to society’s view of the leader.
Recently, Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, stepped down because his health issues were becoming a problem. The interesting thing is that the problem was that his health was becoming a public affairs issue. People were afraid that he was becoming ill and that Apple would falter without him. As a result, stock fell.

While the truth is that Apple will continue to move forward without Steve Jobs. It is interesting to note how attached a CEO and a company can become. Sometimes it reaches a point when they become synonomous.

When I see things like this I often look for insights that I can apply to church leadership. This case is no different.
Steve Job’s departure made me think about those churches that have become synonomous with their leaders. Is there a danger with the way some leaders have become tethered or even overshadowed their churches?

There is no doubt that America is looking for it’s “stars”. We have even made tv shows about looking for the next idol. I am afraid well intentioned pastors may be falling in the trap of fame. With multi-site campuses, self named websites, and a tv spots, some church leaders have made it big.
Don’t think I am against these tools. They can be very useful and help advance the gospel. However, in a society like ours they can also detract from the message of Jesus. I could say much more but I don’t want to sound like a critic of large churches. I am not.

Shop Shop

Date January 14, 2009

One of the reasons I got my iPhone was to help make my life more organized. So when I went grocery shopping yesterday I searched the App Store for something to make my shopping easier.

In comes Shop Shop. A simple list application that helps create shopping lists. And I must say that I found it to be exactly what I needed. Shop shop allows you to create a list of items and enter a quantity for that item. Then after entering all off the you simply swipe the items as you get them. The result is that you don’t get home and find out you forgot bread for the kids’ lunches.

The best thing I like about Shop Shop is that it memorizes the items you enter. Then when you need to create another list you simply select th memorized items. This allows you to easily compile a list throughout the week when you realize what items you need.

Overall I find this to be a very useful, simple application. Iknow it works because I took all 3 of my children with me to the store and I did not forget anything.

iPhone 3G

Date January 12, 2009

I recently purchased an iPhone. My old phone had seen better days and it was time to find something that helped me be more productive. I have now had the phone for 4 days and I must say that I really like it. It does take some time to get familiar with how everything functions, but it is a sleek piece of technology. Over the next couple of weeks I will post some reviews of apps and other interesting info about the iPhone.
